Troubadour

v.1. There’s a leading type of question, running round between the lines,
That ubiquitous intention, difficult to re-define, you know that
“Do you live around here?” “No, my wife is out of work.”
“How’s the business going Charlie?” “Have you heard the latest lurk?”
And the candlelight is dying, but there’s brightness in their eyes,
I’m not the only one who’s flying, there’s Rick E.V. in his disguise,
It’s the phoney side, it’s the lonely side,
That’s the night time life you see.

v.2. There’s a siren in the kitchen in a low key, low cut sort of way,
And the chef he’s in there smiling, really out of it today,
And the audience ios grooving, as they cuddle in their twos,
And there’s always someone out there wishing they was in my shoes.
And King Krycer and Anna Fits are gliding on the stage,
Singing songs that nearly titillate and outrage.
It’s the seamy side.
It’s the dreamy side.
It’s the night time life for me.

v.3. Came in late and never got a seat and had to stand.
I’m wishin’ it was like that, not just playing for the band
And a couple of free selectors, too much make up on their eyes,
But if you strike up conversation you just might get a nice surprise,
And the bar is stayin’ open, and so’s your mind and so’s the night,
And you wonder who you’ll be with between now and early light.
It’s adventure time.
Glad I met ya time.
It’s the night time life for me.

Instl break

v.4. Well I’m grooving down the highway at a steady ninety five,
And the engine really digs it, and it’s good to be alive,
And the next town’s club is beckoning, new faces and new laughs,
And you’re singin’ for your supper and exchanging autographs.
And yeah! I used to know her, and what’s he doin’ now?
You try and find some health food and still get your sleep somehow,
It’s a thriving time.
Stay a-living time.
It’s the night time life for me.
It’s the night time life . . . for me.

©27/07/81 I was doing gigs from Nimbin to Melbourne to see my son. A back accident put me off the road for awhile, so whilst recuperating in Melbourne, I was night manager at The Troubadour, local and interstate singers' folk lounge.
